Chapter Eight

Jack in the Box was on the corner of Jefferson and La Brea, which possibly put it just on the edge of Catrachos territory. It was only a few blocks away from where I’d escaped in the stolen car earlier that day, but the way I figured it, the bad guys mostly kept to the same blocks – even within a particular territory, each soldier would have turf of their own. I didn’t think anyone would recognize me, but I’d stopped off at a store and bought some new clothes, and I’d ditched the baseball cap and hoodie. Little things, I’d found over the years, often made all the difference.

Even though we were close to the street action further up Jefferson, this area was a little more relaxed; it was a place to get a bite to eat, not score some drugs – although I was sure you still could, if you wanted – and it had a less violent energy than the area outside La Vecindad. It was strange the effect a few hundred meters of concrete could have, the world changing from block to block as you moved through this bizarre city.

I’d dropped Sanchez off outside his house, much to his surprise – I think he fully expected me to kill him in the end – but not without planting a seed in his mind that I hoped would stop him from telling anyone what had happened. I’d made a fake call on my cellphone, given an official-sounding access code, and acted as if I was some sort of federal agent, without specifying any particular agency or department. I’d given all of Sanchez’s details – that I’d memorized from the ID in his wallet – and relayed some of the information he’d given, before recommending that he be put under surveillance, with an aim to arrest him if he was found to be passing on a warning to any gang member. Maybe he’d bought the routine, and maybe he hadn’t; but I figured it might make him reluctant to get in touch with the bad guys, for a little while at least. But I knew that sooner or later, people would track him down and ask what the crazy guy from the bar had wanted with him, and I was sure that if they were persuasive enough, he would tell them; and so I wanted to act on the intelligence he’d given me before it was too late.

I parked the van in the lot outside the restaurant, and looked through the windows for a while at the brightly lit interior. I could see two guys and one girl behind the order stations, and two more girls and a guy working on clean-up. I couldn’t see who was working in the kitchen, but imagined there would be another three or four people there too, maybe more. The place was open twenty-four hours a day, and even though this wasn’t peak dining time, it was still fairly busy. There
